Oregon Trail Series HistoryWhere did the Oregon Trail Series come from?The year was 1999. Melissa Berman suggested to Clem LaCava, Phil Vaughn, and Marilyn Bailey after The McKenzie River Trail Run, according to reliable sources, that the Oregon trail races might be organized as a trail series. Other race directors in the group thought it was a good idea. Clem talked with directors from other trail series, and settled on the current scoring method.
Each year between 2000 and 2005 brought new races to the series, but for 3 years now the list has been consistent (see chart below). 2007 promises to be an exciting year, with the USATF 100K Master's Trail Championship at Where's Waldo, and an elite group running in the McKenzie Invitational the day after the MRTR. the next spring, Stephan Willow had created the web page, and the Oregon
Trail Series was born. In that first year, there were 5 races: Jack
Frost, McDonald Forest, Siskiyou Out Back, PCT 50/50 and the McKenzie
River Trail run. Justin Soares edged out a narrow win over John Pearch
in the men's race that year, and Linda Samet won the women's race.
